Водоем расположен в 35 км к востоку от г. Эмба, в западных отрогах Муголжарского горного массива. Водохранилище образовано в результате установки плотины на русле одноименной реки.Берега и дно сложены из каменистого субстрата. Глубина в среднем 3,4 - 3,8 м в хвостовой части и до 20м у плотины.
